Early Interventions according to General Movement Assessment – an overview
When a child meets the criteria of high risk of cerebral palsy, intervention should start as soon as possible. Parents want an early diagnosis and treatment and support implementation as soon as possible. Early intervention builds on a critical developmental time for plasticity of the developing systems. Intervention referrals should be specific as per recommendations in the International Clinical Practice Guidelines.
A specific intervention, the Movement Imitation Therapy for Preterm Babies, appears to be able to generate promising results in terms of outcomes for children with cerebral hemorrhage and abnormal general movements and warrants further research.
This intervention is a noninvasive, low-risk, rapidly learnable, and cost-effective treatment that shows positive effects on the neurodevelopmental outcome of preterm infants with cramped-synchronized GMs.
